Chambersburg roundup: Trojan wrestlers go 4-1 at Gettysburg duals

Chambersburg goes 4-1 at Gettysburg Duals Tournament: The Trojans rolled to four easy victories Saturday before running into the host team, and the Warriors — helped by three forfeit wins — were up to the task, taking a 37-23 decision to win the tournament.

A major decision by Luke Mentzer at 132 and a win by Anthony Colangelo at 132 staked Chambersburg (4-2) to a 7-0 lead. Gettysburg won four of the next five bouts, other than a major decision at 172 by Tate Nichter, to take the lead for good. Other Trojan wins came by Zach Evans and Rylan Carter (by decision) and Karl Shindledecker (pin).

Earlier in the day, the Trojans rolled to wins over Palmyra (63-0), Red Lion (55-12), Big Spring (50-22) and Biglerville (52-22).

Chambersburg had eight pins vs. Palmyra and six against Red Lion, and the only points the Lions got came via two forfeits. The Trojans also stacked up six pins each vs. Big Spring and Biglerville.

For the day, seven Chambersburg wrestlers went unbeaten: Shindledecker was 5-0 with 5 pins, Mentzer was 5-0 with 4 pins and a major, Carter was 5-0 with 4 pins, Evans was 5-0 with 2 pins and Colangelo was 5-0 with a pin and a technical fall. Nichter went 4-0 with 2 pins and a major and Ethan Faytol was 3-0 with 3 pins.

Also, Ryder Davenport was 4-1 with 2 pins and 2 majors, and Aiden Hight went 3-1 with 3 pins.

Wilson 71, Chambersburg 43: The Trojans played their third straight game against a serious District 3 title contender and came up short against the Bulldogs in a non-league game Saturday night.

Wilson (4-0) bolted to a 20-7 lead after one period and led 37-18 at the half. Stevie Mitchell, a Marquette recruit, scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half, including 9 in a row in the second period.

Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said, “We fought until the very end; I loved our effort. We gained valuable experience against a quality opponent. We got better tonight and I look forward to our practice Monday.”

For the Trojans (0-3), Jacob Bassham scored a career-high 15 points and Carter Sollenberger also hit his career high with a 14-point effort. He scored 9 in the first half.

Chambersburg attempted 24 free throws and made 15, while the Bulldogs hit 13 of 22.
