Shippensburg Takes Mid-Penn Colonial Title Outright

By Matt Kellam

Shippensburg—Tuesday night was a good one for the Shippensburg Greyhounds basketball team without even taking the court.

Boiling Springs’ upset of Northern York, 51-50, handed Shippensburg the outright title to the Mid Penn Colonial conference.  The Greyhounds had claimed a share by defeating Northern York Friday night, 72-60.

Greyhound Coach Ray Staver said, “One of the parents called me to tell me the news and then my phone just blew up.  We figured we’d be scrimmaging next week and just tweaking some things on offense preparing for the district playoffs, but now we get to play a quality opponent at a nice venue.”

That opponent will be the winner of the Mid Penn Commonwealth conference which is currently led by Central Dauphin with one game remaining.  A win Friday night at home against State College will punch their ticket to the playoffs.  CD beat the Little Lions by 26 earlier in the season.

The playoffs will be held next Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Thursday, Feb. 13.

Shippensburg has two games remaining on their regular season schedule, Thursday night at home against East Pennsboro, (9-12), and Friday night at Red Land, (0-21).  They currently sit in 5th place for the 5A district playoffs.

Coach Staver added, “I’m happy for the kids.  This is just icing on the cake.”
