The result was a 40-21 victory for the Hawks in a preliminary round match of the PIAA Class 3A Team Wrestling Championships on Monday night at Catasauqua H.S.

Chambersburg, which reached the state team tournament for just the second time, finished with a 14-8 dual meet record. Becahi (12-2) will wrestle Thursday in a first-round match at Giant Center against Williamsport.

“We started the match right in the strength of their lineup,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. “They are a solid group — even though they were missing three starters.

“Our kids competed hard. Some of them, as the match went on, did better. Like Luke (Mentzer) at 106; he was down 11-1 after one period, but lost only 13-4.”

The Hawks went ahead 10-0 before Karl Shindledecker earned a 4-2 decision at 120. Bethlehem Catholic they captured four consecutive wins (2 pins, a technical fall and a major decision) to race to its 31-3 advantage.

Mentzer said, “Even there, (Anthony) Colangelo (132) and (Ryder) Davenport (145) were up against Division I kids and they competed.”

Chambersburg then posted three straight wins — a pin by Tate Nichter in 1:48 at 152, and decisions by Luke Nichter (7-1 at 160) and Carson Mello (5-1 at 170) to cut the lead to 31-15.

But the Hawks wrapped up the victory with a pin at 182, and also received a decision at 195.

At 285, Chambersburg’s Wyatt Hull finished off the meet with a pin in 2:27.

“Wyatt could have gotten a forfeit win at 220,” Mentzer said, “but I asked him if he wanted to wrestle. And he did, so we bumped him up. The kid they sent out was about 6-foot-6, maybe 260 pounds and his feet had to be size 17 or 18. He was a mountain. But Wyatt got a takedown to his back and pinned him.

“We’ll take a couple of days off now and start getting prepared for sectionals.”

The individual postseason begins Feb. 14-15 with the Section Tournament at Mechanicsburg.
