The Trojans whipped Spring Grove 48-24 in the consolation quarterfinals, then earned a 37-36 victory over rival Cumberland Valley in the semifinals, with the final point coming via criteria after the score finished tied 36-36.

Chambersburg won the most bouts, 8-6.

“We had a few matches we had to win — 132, 138 and 152 — and we won them all,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. “We were a slight favorite at 152, but the other two were complete toss-ups.”

At 132, Anthony Colangelo used three takedowns to win 9-5 over Spencer Machemer, followed by a 2-1 victory at 138 by Mixell over Kyle Miller. Mixell had a quick takedown, then turned on the defense.

With the score 22-18 in the Trojans’ favor, Mentzer bumped Ryder Davenport up to 152 and he responded with a 9-4 win over Liam Anderson. A 6-0 second period — escape, takedown and nearfall — was the difference.

Davenport said, “I wasn’t thinking about the (team) situation. I thought I’d get (Gabriel) Belga, but he wrestled at 145. So I just went out and wrestled. It does feel nice to beat CV.”

At that point, Chambersburg led 25-18, and with Tate and Luke Nichter lined up for the next two bouts, Mentzer felt good about his chances.

“I knew if we got 12 points in those two, we’d win, and I wouldn’t have to send out (Carson) Mello (who is nursing an injury),” Mentzer said. “Then when we knew we had eight wins, I told Tate all he needed was  tech fall.”

Nichter did get a tech, and Luke followed with a pin, moving the score to 36-18. With 8 wins already, Chambersburg couldn’t lose unless they had a team point deducted.

CV finished with three pins to tie it, but there was no drama — especially since the scorer’s table put up the 37th point ahead of time.

Mentzer said, “In the first bout of the night, Wyatt Hull (285) got a takedown in the third period to win 11-3 and get us a major, and that one extra point made a huge difference.”

Also winning for the Trojans (14-6) were Luke Mentzer (pin at 106) and Karl Shindledecker (pin at 120).

“Our guys went out and wrestled well and scored points,” Matt Mentzer said. “We stayed in good position, and when we were out of position, we got right back in position.”

Against Spring Grove, the Trojans got pins from Tyler Smith (126), Colangelo, Davenport, Tate Nichter and Zach Evans. Luke Nichter had a technical fall, a major from Shindledecker and wins from Hull, Mentzer and Mixell.

NOTES: CD (16-2) beat Hempfield 44-21 after losing 36-34 to Dallastown in the semifinals … Gettysburg won the other semifinal, 43-26 over CV.
