Trojans wrestlers reach quarters; fall to Central Dauphin

LINGLESTOWN — The Chambersburg wrestling team has had two shots at perennial District 3 powerhouse Central Dauphin this season.

The first one, at home, was a near miss, a two-point defeat.

The Trojans got another chance Tuesday night at CD in the quarterfinals of the District 3 Class 3A team championships. Once again, it was close. But once again, the Rams had a bit too much and prevailed, 42-31.

Chambersburg (12-6) will wrestle Spring Grove (12-5) on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Spring Grove in a consolation match. The winner faces the loser of a semifinal between Gettysburg  and Cumberland Valley for a top-four finish and a berth in the PIAA Tournament.

In the first round Tuesday, the Trojans hammered Garden Spot, 50-21, while CD breezed to a 61-4 win over Donegal.

The match against the Rams turned on two bouts, at 145 and 182. Ryder Davenport got stuck in a cradle twice and lost a roly-poly match to CD’s Wade McClune, 12-11, at 145.

At 182, Chambersburg’s Carson Mello was bumped up to face Timmy Smith and trailed only 3-2 in the second period. But as Mello came out from the bottom, he tweaked a knee injury and was forced to default.

Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said, “If you flip-flop the result at 145 and Mello can finish, that makes for a different finish and would have made the last few matches end a little differently.

“Ryder and their guy are similar — they both like to roll around too much. Ryder got caught on his back twice and that was the difference. Carson had a tough assignment, but he wanted to wrestle. His knee should be OK for him to wrestle Thursday — it just has to pop back in place.”

Central Dauphin (16-1), which faces Dallastown (14-2) in a semifinal Thursday, won eight bouts, including three pins, a forfeit, a default, a technical fall and a major decision.

For the Trojans, Tate Nichter (160), Luke Nichter (170), Wyatt Hull (285) and Karl Shindledecker (120) all scored pins, while Luke Mentzer (106) rolled to a 16-3 major decision and Anthony Colangelo won by a 6-4 decision at 132, scoring the winning takedown with 0:38 left.

Matt Mentzer said, “Colangelo has a big gas tank. We thought if we could keep it close, they’d get tired and that’s what happened.

“I thought we outwrestled them — we pushed the pace and they backed up. Those kids are taught how to stall. A few of their kids did the same thing, like grabbing onto a wrist (from bottom) and holding on. We refuse to teach that kind of thing.”

Against Garden Spot (9-2), the Nichters both got swift pins, with Tate taking 29 seconds and Luke only 14.

Also recording falls were Shindledecker, Colangelo, Mello, Zack Evans (195) and Rylan Carter (113), while Mentzer had a tech fall and Kelby Mixell (138) pulled out a 4-3 victory on a takedown with about 20 seconds remaining.
