CHAMBERSBURG — What’s worse than having five starters out for a wrestling match?
Try having seven out.
That’s the fate that was dealt to Chambersburg on Thursday night for a Mid Penn Commonwealth meet against Cumberland Valley in the CASHS Auxiliary Gym, and the Eagles took full advantage to rack up a 58-17 victory.
In a match against Gettysburg on Wednesday, the Trojans had five starters out (four for being sick) and another got sick during his match. It got even worse when two more had to sit out vs. CV, although the Eagles also had some wrestlers sidelined with the flu.
Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer had an interesting way to put it: “The kids must be feeling better — only one puked tonight instead of the three we had last night.
“Look, CV was the same way. They had a couple of kids scratched, too, but they just didn’t have their key guys out.”
Cumberland Valley (11-4, 4-2 MPC), which jumped the Trojans (11-5, 3-3 MPC) to land in the No. 4 spot for the District 3 team championships (unofficially), rolled to a 34-0 lead.
The first bout was at 285 and Mentzer bumped up Wyatt Hull from 220. CV coach Dave Heckard countered by moving Jacob Lucas up from 195, and Lucas rang up five takedowns in a 12-3 major decision.
The Eagles then had a forfeit and three pins to take the huge lead.
Chambersburg, which is now in the No. 9 position in the district power rankings, halved that deficit to 34-17 with three straight wins.
Ryder Davenport scored three sets of nearfall points on his way to a 15-0 technical fall at 145 pounds over Elijah Jumper.
That was followed quickly by first-period pins from Tate Nichter at 152 (0:26) and Luke Nichter at 160 (1:08).
But the Eagles closed it out with two pins and a pair of forfeits.
Mentzer said, “I thought there was a little more effort tonight. We just have to get everybody back. I still feel positive about our team for next week.”
