Shippensburg trounces rival Big Spring 72-51

By Matt Kellam

Shippensburg—The Shippensburg Greyhounds held Big Spring without a field goal until the 1:40 mark of the first period in route to a convincing 72-51 victory in Mid Penn Colonial action Friday night.

Winning coach Ray Staver said, “for three quarters we played great defense.”

The Greyhounds, (11-3, 7-1MPC), held Big Spring leading scorer Matthew Ward to two points through three quarters. He came into the game averaging 17.2 per game.

Shippensburg started the game on a 17-1 run before a steal and basket by Jack Shulenberger gave the Bulldogs their first field goal.

The Greyhounds would lead 19-7 at the quarter.

Shippensburg led 29-15 with just over a minute to play in the half, but a three by Collin Taylor, a lay-up by Jayden Statum, and buzzer beater by Jeremy Thomas gave the Greyhounds a 36-15 halftime lead.

“That was really big”, commented coach Staver. “They were still in reach, especially the way they shoot threes.”

Shippensburg outscored the Bulldogs 20-12 in the third to put the game away.

The Greyhounds put four starters in double figures led by Sophomore Anthony Smith with 16. He added 10 rebounds. He was joined by Taylor with 13, Statum with 12, and Thomas with 10.

Ward scored 14 in the final quarter to finish with 16 points. Javaun Moore added 15 and Gavin Pritchard had 10.

Big Spring is now 7-7, 2-5 in the conference.

For coach Staver it was win number 399. He’ll go for his 400th career win Tuesday night at Waynesboro.
