Defense highlights Waynesboro boys’ big win

MECHANICSBURG – The Waynesboro boys basketball team put on a defensive showcase Monday night to dial a win over Mechanicsburg, 60-40 in a crossover Mid-Penn game.

“I like the way we defended,” ‘Boro coach Tom Hoffman said. “The most positive takeaway was how we guarded; we also were able to hit shots and create separation.”

Boro utilized a full court press for the entire game, but the Wildcats really struggled to break it in the first half. The Indians went into halftime up 8 points.

“We made them feel uncomfortable with our press,” Boro’s Bryce Shaffer said. “Overall, we played great defense.”

But the Indians would continue to control the game in the second half, outscoring Mechanicsburg 32-19 in the final two frames.

“We played great team basketball, and we spread the ball really well,” Shaffer said.

Cole Rhyne led Boro with 23 points, and Indian teammates Jaylon Bean and Connor Jacobs dropped 11 points each. Mecahnicsburg was led by Lukas Rhodes and Tyree Morris with 17 points each.

Boro hit nine three-pointers in the game, compared to Mechanicsburg’s 1. Boro’s Connor Jacobs had 3, and CJ Brown and Cole Rhyne had 2 each.

“Brown, he almost didn’t make the team,” Hoffman said. “And here he is, coming off the bench in a big game and hitting two threes to spark us a little bit with his scoring.”

Only four players on Mechanicsburg scored points in tonight’s game.

“We just need consistency, in the roles we ask guys to fill,” Hoffman said. “Slowly but surely, our guys are buying into that.”

Waynesboro (6-4) will host Colonial foe James Buchanan tomorrow night. Mechanicsburg plays Palmyra tomorrow night in a Mid-Penn Keystone matchup.

“The plan for JB is the same as tonight,” Rhyne said. “Defense.”
