Big third quarter pushes CD East past Chambersburg girls

CHAMBERSBURG – The Chambersburg girls basketball team built a 6 point lead at halftime, but were outscored by the Panthers 21-10 in the third period to drop a Commonwealth contest to East 50-38.

Starting in the third quarter, East began a press that the Lady Trojans struggled to handle. Overall, Chambersburg committed 20 turnovers.

“When we go up against a press, we don’t handle it well,” Chambersburg coach Justin English said. “That’s on me. We need to get better prepared, because it won’t be the last time we see it.”

East had a five point lead going into the final period, but Chambersburg was able to cut the lead to 2 with five minutes to go. However, East was able to stall the basketball and forced the Trojans to foul. The Panthers were in the bonus, so any foul gave them a free trip to the foul line.

“When they got up, they played the stall game and we had to foul,” English said. “I’m not going to let anyone play a delayed game on us.”

Although Chambersburg nailed six three-pointers, they shot a dismal 4 for 15 from the free throw line.

Sydney Schmus led the Lady Trojans with 12 points, and Madi Flythe contributed 9. East’s Mikayla Wright had 16 points and Skye Ewings dropped 13.

The Lady Trojans (2-6, 1-4 MPC) will return to action Jan. 6 as they play host to James Buchanan. East (2-6, 2-3 MPC) will play division-leading Cumberland Valley on Jan. 7.

“We’re going to get back to basics, and take care of the basketball,” English said.
