Greencastle girls tally win over South Western

GREENCASTLE – The Greencastle girls basketball team used a big second quarter run and continued to roll as the game went on, dismantling South Western Thursday night by a score of 53-36.

Knotted at 12-12 after the first period, Greencastle outscored the Mustangs 15-6 in the second period to go up by 9 at halftime. Of Greencastle’s 27 points at the half, all but two came from Mia Libby and Sayge Wilhide.

G-A would then outscore the Mustangs 26-18 in the second half to coast to their non-league victory.

Libby and Wilhide both finished the game leading Greencastle with 18 points. South Western was paced by Madeline Lehker with 16.

“Libby is a ball of energy, she comes in off of the bench and does it,” G-A coach Mike Rhine said. “Wilhide got us on the right track. She hit six threes, it was nice seeing her do her thing.”

Wilhide and Libby attributed the team’s smart passing and defense as the keys to their win.

“Overall, we just worked really well together,” Wilhide said. “Passing helped with getting good shots.”

G-A tallied 10 assists, and connected for 10 three-pointers.

“We played awesome defense, and communicated very well. We wanted this game, and we knew what we needed to do,” Libby said.

Defensively, G-A’s Olivia Winslow and Jenna Powell collected four defensive rebounds each. Winslow had three blocks and teammate Lauren Pool had two blocks.

“The defense was very active; and everyone did some positive things tonight,” Rhine said.

G-A (6-2) will look to improve their record against Colonial foe Waynesboro tomorrow. South Western (2-8) will play York-Adams power Central York tomorrow.

“Waynesboro has a new coach, and a new system,” Rhine said. “Pressuring them is the game plan.”
