Waynesboro boys fall to New Oxford in championship

NEW OXFORD – Waynesboro kept it interesting, but a couple of costly turnovers and missed opportunities led to New Oxford pulling out a 54-46 win over the Indians Saturday night in the New Oxford Holiday Tournament.

Heading into the fourth quarter, it appeared as though New Oxford would have the game all wrapped up, leading Boro by 12. But a couple of clutch baskets by Cole Rhyne, Jaylon Bean and Bryce Shaffer had the Indians within striking distance, shortening the Colonial lead to 2 with a minute left.

“We never gave up,” Boro coach Tom Hoffman said. “At different times, it looked pretty grim and it looked easy to mail it in and say, we gave it a good shot. But we didn’t, and we got it down to a two point game.”

But a missed offensive rebound and a Colonial steal helped New Oxford score the final six points of the game en route to their championship win.

“There were numerous opportunities that are magnified in the last minute of the game,” Hoffman said. “But our kids never gave up, fought hard, and had a chance at winning that basketball game.”

The Colonials were led in scoring by tournament MVP Abdul Janneh Jr., who scored 19 points. Rhyne, who was named to the all-tournament team, chipped in 25 points for the Indians and Shaffer added 12.

“In the second half, I thought Shaffer really stepped up,” Hoffman said. “He did a lot of really good things and was aggressive with his shot.”

Boro (4-4) will return to the court Jan. 3 when they take on Colonial foe Greencastle-Antrim. New Oxford (7-2) will play Red Lion on Jan. 3.

“We will continue to work on some things on the offensive end, and get some more guys comfortable scoring,” Hoffman said.
