Waynesboro boys survive Dover; advance to championship

NEW OXFORD – The Waynesboro boys basketball team escaped a late Dover comeback in the first round of the New Oxford Holiday Tournament Friday night, beating the Eagles 60-56.

After the first quarter, Boro was up 18-7, but Dover outscored the Indians 17-11 in the second quarter to pull within 5 at halftime.

The Eagles continued the trend after the third quarter, only trailing Boro 36-41. However, the Indians entered the final period on a 11-2 run with three minutes to go.

But Dover still would not go away. Dover would continue to chip away at the Indians’ lead, and a three-pointer by the Eagles’ Austin Henze pulled Dover within 3 with 16 seconds to play.

With 12 seconds left, ‘Boro’s Cole Rhyne went to the foul line, but only made one. A quick turnaround bucket by Dover pulled the Eagles within 2, their smallest deficit of the game.

“They hit a couple big shots and we let them back in the game,” Boro coach Tom Hoffman said. “Some of it was decision making, some of it was missed free throws.”

Rhyne was sent to the foul line again and despite the loud New Oxford gym, calmly sank both shots, finally putting Dover away.

“Rhyne’s been through a ton of these wars; and we were able to escape,” Hoffman said.

Rhyne led Boro with 30 points, and Bryce Shaffer contributed 13. Dover was led by Nate Rorrer with 22.

The only returning starter from Boro, Rhyne’s experience leads him to run the offense so effectively.

“I’ve been here for so long,” Rhyne said. “I grew up in the program.”

With the win, Boro will play New Oxford tomorrow at 7:30 for the championship. The Indians are the returning champions.

“We’ve got to find a way to up the intensity level, particularly on the defensive end,” Hoffman said.

“The goal is to win the championship. That’s it,” Rhyne said.
