Trojan Wars validates toughness to 5 county teams

CHAMBERSBURG — Just in case there was any doubt about the strength of the MyHOUSE Trojan Wars wrestling tournament at Chambersburg, here is a rough fact for county teams: five area teams brought rosters of wrestlers to CASHS Field House on Friday and  a total of only seven kids were able to advance to the quarterfinals.

Mello action

Chambersburg 170-pounder Carson Mello, top, controls Aven Ayala of Milton while earning a 16-5 major decision in the 2nd round of of the Trojan Wars on Friday afternoon.

Trojan Wars is now up to 49 varsity teams and the level of competition seems to improve each year.

The host Trojans lead the way with four quarterfinalists: Karl Shindledecker at 120 pounds, Tate Nichter at 152, Luke Nichter at 160 and Carson Mello at 170.

Waynesboro pushed a pair through — Kaden Rouzer at 126 and Adam Wertz at 160. Shippensburg had the other area double winner, Dylan Ramsey at 132.

Chambersburg’s Luke Nichter had the quickest day of work, taking just 15 seconds for a pin in his first bout, then needing only 38 in the second round. His brother Tate Nichter also scored a pair of first-period falls.

Shindledecker produced a technical fall in his opener, then had a pin, while Mello scored a pin and then a major decision.

Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said, “I felt all day that our kids were distracted, with everything going on (here at home). It was a different kind of feel; I felt I was distracted, too, trying to make sure these teams were welcome here.”

But, by virtue of an outstanding day in the consolation rounds, the Trojans stand in first place in the team standings after the first day.

In addition to the four in the quarters, Chambersburg also has eight still alive in the consolation rounds: Luke Mentzer (106), Rylan Carter (113), Anthony Colangelo (132), Ryder Davenport (145), Bryce McKenzie (182), Zach Evans (195), Wyatt Hull (220) and Joey Fuller (285).

All told, the Trojans compiled a 12-2 record in the consolations, which included six pins and two other bonus point victories.

“I did like how we finished up,” Mentzer said. “It was a nice win by Joey, and McKenzie getting to the second day is good. We just need to win the matches we’re supposed to win, and we did in the second part of the day.”

Wrestling begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with a round of consolations, followed by quarterfinals at 10 a.m., semifinals at 1:30 and the championship round set to begin at 6:15.

The Greyhounds’ Ramsey worked for a pin in his first match, then moved on with a 7-0 decision. Teammate Jeffery Russell (126) got a pin, but was knocked out 5-2 by Matt Ross of Pottsville.

For Waynesboro, Wertz had a strong day, notching pins in 1:00 and 1:04. Indian teammate Rouzer advanced with a major decision and a fall.

Also alive in the consolations are Greencastle-Antrim’s Jared Miller (145); Shippensburg’s Russell (120), Dominic Frontino (138), Kohl Holderbaum (145) and Sean Hess (285); and Waynesboro’s Keegan Lohman (170) and Hayden Reichard (182).
