Greencastle girls notch win over Big Spring

GREENCASTLE – A combination of aggressive defense and timely shooting helped the Greencastle-Antrim girls basketball team overcome Big Spring’s athleticism in a Mid-Penn Colonial matchup Tuesday night.

Greencastle was able to roll to a 48-33 victory, but Big Spring didn’t make it easy. The Bulldogs started the game on a 7-3 run, and the Blue Devils got in some foul trouble early.

Insert Greencastle’s Mia Libby and Jenna Powell, and things quickly turned around for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils (5-1, 3-0 MPC) outscored Big Spring 8-2 for the remainder of the first period, and prevented the Bulldogs from scoring a single field goal in the second quarter.

“We’ve been doing it as a team, pretty much all year,” Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said. “(Powell) just did her job, worked hard on the boards, played good defense, anytime she had a shot near the bucket she knocked it in and scored some big points for us.”

Going into the fourth quarter, it appeared that Greencastle would just run away with it, but Big Spring (2-3, 1-2 MPC) kept it interesting. The Bulldogs opened the final period on a 9-0 run, cutting the Blue Devil lead to 8.

“We just looked at them and said, ‘Listen, we have nothing to lose right now,’” Big Spring coach Randy Jones said.

However, Greencastle baskets by Libby and Powell expanded the lead to 12 and the Blue Devils never looked back.

McKenna Rakaczewski led the Blue Devils with 19 points, while Libby and Winslow chipped in 10. Allison Frick paced the Bulldogs with 9, and Rebecca Franklin added 7.

“Allison Frick plays her tail off pretty near 32 minutes,” Jones said.

“We have a group of seven that play together and they’ve got each other’s back … it’s a ‘we’ thing,” Rhine said.

Big Spring will play West Perry on Saturday, while the Blue Devils gear up to play division favorite Shippensburg on Friday night.

Rhine said, “We’ve got to work against a zone. [Shippensburg] is going to play a zone, so we’ve got to work on our passing, catching, working together on offense.”
