Greencastle rdp 12/14: Parks runs at nationals; girls suffer 1st loss

Foot Locker Nationals: Greencastle-Antrim senior Taryn Parks finished her illustrious cross country career with a 40th-place finish at the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego on Saturday.

Parks was the first runner to qualify for nationals four times in her career since 2014.

She took 11th at regionals recently and only the the top 10 qualify for nationals, but one girl withdrew with an injury.

In her career, she placed 40th, 36th and 27th in her previous competitions in San Diego. Her time Saturday was 20:00.5.

Northern York’s Marlee Starliper placed second in the race.

Hollidaysburg 56, Greencastle-Antrim 33: The Blue Devils were in the hunt for the first half of the game, but the Tigers, two-time defending District 6 Class 5A champions, pulled away in the third period.

G-A (4-1) was outscored 15-6 in the third period after trailing only 27-24 at halftime.

Sayge Wilhide drilled four of her six 3-point attempts and led Greencastle in scoring with 12 points.

Ashley Noblit and McKenna Rakaczewski each scored six points and Lauren Pool secured six rebounds.

Blue Devils at Carlisle Tournament: Greencastle-Antrim sent 10 wrestlers to this weekend’s Carlisle Holiday Tournament and picked up a total of 10 victories, with Jared Miller placing fourth at 145 pounds.

Miller had a bye and then won by technical fall to reach the quarterfinals. He lost there to Kobin Karper of Boiling Springs, but came back with three straight victories in the consolation round, including one major decision.

In the bout for third place, Miller fell 6-1 to Dorian Gonzales of Newport. He was 4-2 overall.

At 152 pounds, Adam Booze won his first-round bout by pin, lost, then scored another pin in the consolations before being eliminated.

Other first-round winners were Garrett Keener (by technical fall), Zavier Peck (160) by pin and Carlos Luna (by pin), while Jack Sullivan (285) had a pin in the first consolation round.
