Too many times, too many mistakes.
That was pretty much the theme for the James Buchanan Rockets Friday night.
And the Maryland School for the Deaf Orioles football team took advantage of just about everyone one of those miscues.
The Orioles scored 22 first-half points and went on to beat James Buchanan 36-6 in a non-league game.
The final score showed a 30-point difference, but it could’ve been a lot closer.
The Rockets had the ball inside the Maryland School 10-yard line twice (once each in the second quarter and fourth quarter) and came up empty on downs. And on another drive in the second quarter, what looked to be a nice hook-up on a slant between quarterback Sebastian Wise and wide receiver Grant Ellis turned into a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown by the Orioles Miguel Pavao.
Also, the Orioles pooch kicked the opening kickoff and recovered it at the JB 37. Eight plays later Truth Dorsette, who rushed for a game-high 165 yards, scored from 2 yards out.
And on the first play of second half Dorsette broke through the line on a simple off-tackle run, made one cut and scampered clean 71 yards for another TD.
“We showed glimpses of doing some things well, but then the next one or two plays we have breakdowns,” JB coach David Miller said. “Right now it is just a consistency thing with us.”
JB did catch a break to score its only points of the game in the third quarter when Hunter Smith hauled in pass from Wise, and after a 12-yard pickup was tackled and fumbled, but Ellis was right there to scoop the ball up and raced 53 yards to the end zone.
NOTES: Wise passed 117 yards, but was intercepted 3 times … Logan Miller ran for a team-high 42 yards for the Rockets, who also got an interception from CJ Gearhart.
