JB girls volleyball starts week 2-0

It’s been a good week so far for the James Buchanan Lady Rocket volleyball team.

Two matches, two wins.

Tuesday the Lady Rockets dispatched of Boiling Springs 3-1 and Monday defeated visiting Everett 3-0.

Against Boiling Springs, JB (9-4) lost the first set 25-22, but came back to easily win the second and third sets 25-14 and 25-12. Then had to rally for a 26-24 win in the fourth set after trailing 24-22.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll take it,” JB coach Erica Piper said. “The first set was a wake-up call for the girls and we rebounded nicely the next two sets behind some strong serving. We stayed together that last set and thankfully we pulled it out. But we live and die with our passing and right now we are still up and down. We have to keep getting better.

JB stat leaders: Kills – Rylynn Welsh 15, Campbelle Dayley 11, Lydia Jones 8, Mackenzie Stoner 8. Blocks – Dayley 4, Makena Clayton 2. Assists – Carly Sollenberger 30. Digs – Welsh 21, Dayley 17, Jones 14, Sollenberger 11. Service points – Brinn Seville 23, Dayley 20, Welsh 16, Sollenberger 13.

Against Everett, the Lady Rockets pulled out 3 straight close set victories – 26-24, 25-21 and 25-20.

In the third set, JB trailed 11-6, but Sollenberger ran off 10 straight service points to give the Lady Rockets a cushion they wouldn’t give up.

“I was glad to see the girls were able to put last week (lost 3-0 to Trinity and Waynesboro) behind us and get back on the winning track,” Piper said. “I thought Rylynn and Campbelle had some great swings tonight and our passing was better tonight but still not where it needs to be. Carly did a nice job serving in that third set and the girls stayed together and pulled out some close sets. Everett has a great middle attack, but we were able to side out when we had to and get the win tonight.”
