Forbes Road 7 East Juniata 0
Waterfall, Pa. – The Forbes Road Cardinal field hockey team (5-1) came out on top of their Tuesday afternoon home turf match up with the East Juniata Tigers. The Cardinals once again showed their depth as six different players found the cage in their 7-0 win. Emma Gelvin led off the scoring on her right post penalty corner goal on a send from Hailey Dodson just under 10 minutes in. Two minutes later, freshman Heidi Strait would set up her older sister, Harlie Strait, in a successful shot on goal. Despite having 14 more shots on goal the Tigers were able to hold Forbes’ strong attack to just those two goals in the first half.
The Tigers made some progress downfield during the second half but each time found themselves stopped by the awaiting Cardinal defense who quickly sent the ball back upfield towards goal. Shortly into the half, Harlie Strait would once again find herself in scoring position as she picked up a centered ball from Quincy McMath and sent it into the cage behind the back of EJ’s goalie Emily Carolus. Barely a blink later, McMath intercepted the Tiger’s center pass and made quick work of progressing to the circle and sending the ball to the awaiting stick of Kaelonni Lashinsky taking the score to 4-0. At the 14:09 mark McMath would capitalize on her own goal-scoring opportunity with a beautifully maneuvered reverse shot directly into the cage. Despite a run from EJ to earn a penalty corner and a shot late in the game, the Cardinals were able to gain back control and head to the circle to take advantage of one final penalty corner attempt of their own. Madison Hays picked up a rebounded ball from the keeper’s pads and shoved it over the line during the corner play. Halfback Payton Kendall would score the final goal of the game a little over a minute later on a direct pass from Harlie Strait. EJ won the JV game 3-1. The Cardinals are back in action at home on Thursday as they take on the Southern Huntingdon Rockets at 4 pm.
