JB football loses 35-0 to Springfield

Offensive woes doomed the James Buchanan Rockets football team Saturday afternoon.

The Rockets mustered very little offense while the visiting Springfield Spartans scored touchdowns four different ways in their 35-0 non-league win at Rocket Stadium.

JB (2-2) mustered only 125 total yards, including 19 rushing. The Rockets did have 9 first downs, but 3 of those came by way of Springfield penalties. Also, of the 9 JB possessions only 3 were more than 6 plays and the longest one of 13 plays was halted with a 92-yard touchdown interception return.

“I thought we did some things well, but we are just not consistent enough,” JB coach David Miller said. “Also we have to understand if we are in the game, which we were, if there is a play to be made we have to make it. I feel bad for the players that we have that are giving it their all the whole game, but we have some that aren’t doing that.”

Springfield (3-1) was opportune with its scoring as it scored one touchdown in each of the first 3 quarters and added 2 in the final quarter.

Before the Rocket Homecoming fans could get settled into their sits the Spartans got the first points of the game when Cam Dennis returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for the first touchdown.

The second TD came with 5:32 left in the first half when QB Gabe Franczyk connected with Colin Hussie for a 25-yard scoring pass.

JB opened the second half by going 3-and-out and the Spartans went right to work scoring their third touchdown. Franczyk capped off an 11-play, 63 yard drive with his 1-yard QB sneak.

“Were they 35 points better than us, no,” Miller said. “I thought our pass blocking was good early on, but then it started to break down again. Overall we just need to get better at a lot of things.”

The Spartans final 2 TDs came on Ben Cooney’s 92-yard interception return and Kasai Ashantee’s 3-yard run.
