GREENSBURG — Chambersburg picked a bad day to not play anywhere near its best.
And, against the three-time defending state champion, that was not even close to being good enough.
Hempfield Area emphatically eliminated the Trojans from the PIAA Class 6A Softball Tournament on Monday evening, 13-3, at Seton Hill University in Greensburg.
Chambersburg finishes 17-7, while the Spartans (17-6) will face McDowell in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Trojan coach Chris Skultety did not mince words.
“That was pathetic with capital letters; the worst game we’ve played in three years,” he said. “We did not show enough effort and that’s my fault for not having them ready to go. We were not mentally tough.”
Hempfield proved to be a good-hitting team, getting to starter Mackenzie Stake for 12 hits in five innings of work. But of the nine runs scored off of Stake, only two were earned.
“We made six errors in the first three innings,” Skultety said. “We couldn’t make plays in the field — we practice our bunt defense every day and today we couldn’t get an out.”
The Spartans attempted five bunts. Two went for sacrifices and three were turned into base hits.
Yet for all of its miscues, Chambersburg was still in the game — tied 3-3 — after a two-run top of the third inning.
Sara Washabaugh hit a two-run RBI single in the second inning to pull the Trojans to within 2-1, before Hempfield went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the second.
In the third, Taylor Myers singled, and with two outs she came home on a double to the fence in right by Alyssa Wenger. After a walk to Haiden Brookens, Alyssa Brechbill singled to right to tie the game, 3-3.
“We got some two-out hits, but we also left the bases loaded (in the third), and she (Spartan pitcher Callie Sowers) walked six in the first four innings, but we only got three runs. That’s not good enough.”
Once Chambersburg tied the score, Hempfield immediately seized the game by the throat, pushing across six runs in the bottom of the third.
The Spartans had a single, bunt single and double by Taylor LaVale for one run. Two more runs scored on a bunt and an error, then Jessica Persin unloaded a three-run home run to left field for the crushing blow to make it 9-3.
The Trojans held Hempfield scoreless for the next two innings, but could not get any closer, leaving four runners on base over the next three innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, with Erin Pattillo now pitching, the Spartans strung together five hits, a walk and an error to score four times with one out to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Skultety said, “We had about three players show up today, and that’s not enough to beat them, because they won’t beat themselves like we did. It was just very disappointing.”
NOTES: Myers reached base in all four at-bats, with two singles and a pair of walks … Wenger was 2-for-2 … For Hempfield, Jessica Persin had four RBIs and Olivia Persin, LaVale and Kelsi Terzolino each had three hits … Sowers gave up six hits, walked six and struck out six … Chambersburg graduates four seniors — Kirsten Johnson, Wenger, Kara Neidigh and Rebecca Fischer.
