Maidens build early lead and defeat Blue Devils 9-3 in softball quarterfinals

FAYETTEVILLE- The hits just kept on coming for the Waynesboro Maidens as they used a 16 hit attack  to overpower the Greencastle -Antrim Lady Blue Devils 9-3 at Norlo Park Thursday. With the win the Maidens advance to the semifinals and clinch a berth in the PIAA playoffs. The Maidens will play the winner of tomorrows Donegal / Northern York game in the district semifinals May 28.

The Blue Devils will play in the consolation semifinal Tuesday against the loser of the Donegal/Northern game in an elimination game.

Waynesboro showing no effects from a 52  minute lightning delay  jumped on the Blue Devils early with a four run top of the  first inning, stringing together four straight hits highlighted by a two run single by Leah Blount and  a run scoring single by Emily Eyer.

Waynesboro struck quickly in the second inning , winning pitcher Emily Bittinger started the second with a single and Kayla Kimple hit a two run high fly ball home run easily clearing the left field fence at Norlo Park to give the Maidens a 6-0 lead.

The Maidens added three more in the fourth to take  a 9-1 lead. Waynesboro coach Aaron Burke said ” This was definitely the best game of the year”

Greencastle scored a run in the second, and added two in the seventh.

Mac Miller went 4 for 4 for Waynesboro,  Blount had two hits and four RBI, Kimple, Alexis Rosenberry, Drew Aldridge and Haliey Eyler also had two hits for Waynesboro.

Emily Bittinger pitched a complete game , allowing 10 hits and was helped by an outstanding Waynesboro defense. The Blue Devils stranded 13 runners.

Hailey Long had two hits for Greencastle, and was the only Blue Devil with multiple hits.

It was the Maidens seventh consecutive win, the loss snapped a 10 game Blue Devils winning streak.
