JB softball pulls out win over Big Spring

The James Buchanan Lady Rockets made Wednesday’s game a memorable one for their senior players.

The Rockets scratched across 2 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 3-2 win over Big Spring in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game.

Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, JB (13-5) got things rolling when Kate Ebersole, who had 2 hits, and Alyssa Blair opened with consecutive singles, but after 2 straight strikeouts the rally looked bleak. But on a 1-and-1 count No. 9 hitter Lindsay Meyers lined a single to score Ebersole with the tying run.

And on the same play Big Spring threw the ball away at home trying to get Ebersole and Blair alertly raced home and was safe when the Bulldog pitcher couldn’t handle a throw from the catcher.

Jenna Mongold earned the victory, pitching 5 1/3 innings of relief. She gave up 2 hits, no runs, 1 walk and struck out 7.

JB closes out it’s regular season with away games Thursday at Shippensburg and Friday at Red Land. Also, currently the Lady Rockets are No. 4 in the District 3 Class AAAA Power Rankings. If JB can stay in the top 4 it will earn a first-round bye and a home quarterfinal playoff game.
