The James Buchanan Lady Rockets softball team split a pair of non-league games Thursday and Friday.
Despite outhitting Central Dauphin, the Lady Rockets lost 4-0 at CD on Thursday, but JB rebounded with a come-from-behind win over visiting Everett on Friday.
Against CD, JB (6-2) outhit the Rams 4-3, but were unable to push a run across. CD scored 1 run in the first, 2 in the fourth and 1 in the sixth.
“We had some walks that hurt us and they came around to score,” JB coach Troy Pittman said. “Jenna (Mongold) and Liz (Pittman) pitched every other inning. Overall the pitched good, but a few walks and fielding mistakes hurt us.”
Mongold had double and Alyssa Blair hit a triple.
“When you struggle to score runs every little mistake comes back to hurt you,” Pittman said. “It’s still early in the season. We need to keep striving to become better hitters.”
In the game vs. Everett, the Lady Warriors got a home run in the top of the first inning and that lead stood until JB struck for 3-runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases-clearing triple by Kirstyn Atherton.
“Kirstyn’s triple was huge,” Pittman said. “With one swing of the bat we went from one run down to up two. Give credit to Everett, they played well.”
Kyrstin Nichols added an insurance run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
Mongold earned the complete-game victory. She surrendered 2 hits and struck out 10. In the top of the fourth inning Everett had runners on second and third with one out, but Mongold squashed the rally by striking out the next 2 batters.
“If we go down three runs there it would’ve been tough to come back,” Pittman said. “Paige (Doyle) and Kate (Ebersole) made nice catches in the outfield going toward the fence.”
