Forbes Road 16 McConnellsburg 0

McConnellsburg, Pa. – Visiting Forbes Road (3-3, 2-3 ICC) capitalized in the late innings of this matchup of county neighbors, opening up a close game for a 16-0 victory.  After a scoreless first inning, Forbes Road plated three runs in the second.  McConnellsburg (2-4, 2-4 ICC) threatened in the home half of the second, as a leadoff walk to Colton Mellott and one out walk to Kolby Brown gave the Spartans their first threat of the evening.  Cardinal hurler Grayson Hall recorded back-to-back strikeouts to escape the threat.  The Spartans threatened again in the third, as Walker Funk advanced to third base on an infield single and Weston Brunner reached on an error.  Hall again wriggled out of trouble with a strikeout.  Meanwhile, Spartan starting pitcher Brunner rebounded to hold the Cardinals scoreless in the third and fourth.  Forbes Road scratched out two runs in the fifth inning to expand the lead to 5-0.  Ethan Wright launched a two run homer to left in the sixth, stretching the lead to 7-0.  McConnellsburg’s offense showed life in the sixth.  Brunner’s leadoff single and Zander Sipes’ one out double set up McConnellsburg’s strongest threat of the evening.  Hall ended his evening with a strikeout before reaching his pitch limit and yielding the ball to Kole Kendall.  Kendall issued a free pass to load the bases, then, induced a groundout to escape the jam.  Hall collected the pitching victory for FR (5.2 IP, 5H, 2BB, 9K).  Brunner took the tough-luck loss for McConnellsburg (4+ IP, 5R, 0 ER, 4H, 6BB, 1K).  Doogie Garlock and Kolby Brown collected the remaining hits for McConnellsburg.  Forbes Road’s 11-hit attack included multi-hit efforts from Hall, Kendall, Wright, and Caleb Hershey.  The Cardinals also benefitted from 11 free passes issued by Spartan hurlers.
