NEW KINGSTOWN — Chambersburg’s baseball team broke through for its first victory of the season Thursday afternoon when it handed Cumberland Valley a 3-1 Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat on the road.

Elijah Snyder pitched six innings of four-hit ball and allowed only one run to take the win, and Max Armstrong earned a save by pitching a hitless seventh inning.

“We certainly needed that one,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said. “I hope we can take this and run with it.”

Chambersburg (1-5, 1-3 MPC) scored a run in the fourth inning to tie the game 1-1. Brandon Kissinger led off with a walk and was still at first base two outs later. But on a 1-2 count, Hunter Stevens blasted a ball off the fence in left field for a double and Kissinger raced home.

“That was a really big two-out hit by Stevens,” Folmar said. “We’ve not been doing that much, and we really needed it.”

In the top of the sixth, the Trojans struck for two more runs to take the lead. With one out, Kissinger notched a base hit. Max Armstrong was hit by a pitch and Brady Hughes walked to fill the bases.

After an out, Orlian Roman Reyes stepped in and hit a grounder to third base. The third baseman tried to get an out at second, but Hughes beat the throw easily as Kissinger scored.

CV then inexplicably threw the ball toward first base, but the first baseman wasn’t expecting a throw and the third run came around to score.

Folmar said, “We gave Orlian a hit and an RBI because they wouldn’t have thrown anybody out, then we got the extra run because of the errant throw.”

Chambersburg made an error with one out in the bottom of the seventh. But with two outs, centerfielder Brady Stumbaugh made a catch to halt any rally.

“It was a looping live drive, and if it had gotten past Brady it would have been trouble,” Folmar said. “But he came in and made a fantastic catch to end the game.”

Snyder ended up with four walks and one strikeout.

“We still had a few errors (3), but Elijah threw very well to get us out of trouble,” Folmar said. “He threw strikes all day. They had second and third one inning and the bases loaded in another and he got out of both of those jams.”
