JB softball improves to 3-0

For the first time this season the James Buchanan Lady Rocket softball team gave up a run, but the Lady Rockets were able to keep their record perfect.

James Buchanan scored in 4 different innings and Lizzie Pittman struck out 10 batters in a 5-1 win over Trinity in a non-league game Tuesday.

“It was a good team win,” JB coach Troy Pittman said. “The girls executed several bunts and ran the bases well. Kyrstin Nichols caught her first varsity game and did a great job.”

Jenna Mongold got things started for JB (4-0) with a 2-out solo home run in the first inning. In the second, Paige Doyle walked, Kate Ebersole singled and Grace Amsley scored Doyle with a bunt single.

Trinity scored a run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Lady Rockets got 2 big runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Alyssa Blair and Mongold singled and Maria Burkett followed with another single to plate Blair. Mongold later scored on a wild pitch to put JB ahead 4-1.

Pittman scattered 5 hits, but walked 8 in her complete-game effort.

“Lizzie struggled with her command, but she dug deep when she needed to,” Pittman said.

The Lady Rockets got their final run in the sixth when Lindsey Meyers doubled and later scored on a ground out by Amsley.

JB travels to rival Greencastle-Antrim on Wednesday (4:15 p.m.) for a key early season Colonial Division matchup.
