10 runs in last 3 innings lift Trojan softball team over Colts

Sara Washabaugh had 3 RBIs for Chambersburg.

FAYETTEVILLE — Chambersburg simply kept on piling up hits until it had enough.

Cedar Cliff took the lead three times in a Mid Penn Commonwealth softball game Tuesday at Norlo Park, and each time the Trojans responded.

Finally, a five-run bottom of the sixth was enough to subdue the Colts and secure a 12-7 victory.

“I had full confidence in our lineup that we could come back,” Chambersburg rightfielder Alyssa Wenger said. “We’re a scrappy team and we like to run.”

The Trojans had at least a hit in every inning and racked up 16 in the game. With the score tied 7-7 with one out in the bottom of the sixth, Chambersburg strung together six consecutive base hits off Cedar Cliff pitcher Avery Winchell to plate five runs.

“Winchell is capable of shutting teams down; she is a competitor,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “But our offense is pretty capable, too. We can put the bat on the ball from 1 through 9.”

In the sixth, Kirsten Johnson, Alyssa Brechbill and Brooklyn Miller all singled to load the bases. Haiden Brookens came through with a looping fly ball that landed fair in right and drove in a pair of runs.

With runners at second and third, Wenger poked a liner into right that reached the fence, bringing in two more runs and leaving her at third with a triple. Kara Neidigh then singled up the middle to make it 12-7.

The outburst made a winner of pitcher Mackenzie Stake, who allowed eight hits, but struck out eight. And three of the runs scored off of her were unearned.

Skultety said, “Credit to Mack — she just kept pitching.”

The Colts had at least two runners on in every inning until a 1-2-3 sixth and nothing but a leadoff walk in the seventh.

Sarah Dietrich did the most damage for the Colts. She was 3-for-3, including a three-run home run that gave her team a 7-5 lead in the fifth.

But the Trojans came right back with two in the fifth to tie it, with Wenger (bases-loaded walk) and Sara Washabaugh (sacrifice fly) getting the RBIs.

Plenty of Trojans had big days at the plate. Brechbill, Miller and Neidigh each had three hits, Johnson and Wenger had two each and Wenger and Washabaugh each plated three runs.

Skultety said, “We can hit, but our defense has to come around for us to get where we want to be.”
