JB softball shuts out Waynesboro, 6-0

The James Buchanan Lady Rockets hot start to the 2019 softball season continued Monday.

The Rockets put together some timely hitting in 3 of the first 4 innings and rode the arm of Jenna Mongold to a 6-0 win over the Waynesboro Maidens in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game.

JB (3-0, 2-0 MPC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Maddie Bailey walked, stole second and scored on Maria Burkett’s single. Kirstyn Atherton made it 2-0 in the second inning when her double brought home Mongold, who had singled.

Those 2 runs were all Mongold needed as she scattered 3 hits and struck out 9 in her complete game performance.

“Jenna pitched another solid game,” JB coach Troy Pittman said. “Waynesboro had some chances, but Jenna hit her sports and got some big strikeouts.”

The Lady Rockets put the game away with a 4-run fourth inning. Kate Ebersole and Grace Amsley each singled and Ebersole scored on Bailey’s double to make it 3-0.  One batter later Alyssa Blair drilled a 2-run double and Mongold closed out the scoring with an RBI ground out.

“Hitting was timely,” Pittman said. “Maria, Kirstyn, Maddie and Alyssa all had big hits. It was also good to see the bottom of the lineup chip in as Grace and Kate reached base 4 times.”
