Trojans in top 6 at tournament: Chambersburg rolled through the pool play of the Hempfield Tournament unbeaten, but fell in the second round of the playoffs to finish in the top six.

The Trojans went 8-0 in pool play, defeating Hempfield, Lower Dauphin, Lancaster Mennonite and Pennridge all by 2-0 scores. The first round of the playoffs was a 25-13 win over Christopher Dock, but Lanc. Mennonite turned the tables with 15-12 and 15-9 wins in the next round.

Chambersburg coach Marta Helfrick said, “Overall, we had a great day. We didn’t finish where we wanted to, but we had many positives to take from it. We need to continue to work on being mentally consistent as a team and handling playing under pressure.”

William Simmers had a big day at the net, collecting 25 kills, 11 blocks and 11 block kills. Steven Swain and Josiah Picard each had 26 kills and Jayden Thomas had 15. Colton Wright had seven blocks and nine block kills.

Spencer Rajtik had 88 assists, 21 digs and 35 service points. Wes Newman led in digs with 31, and added six aces and 26 points.

Picard also had seven aces, 29 points and 21 digs, Swain had 25 digs and led in service points, and Trey Stepler had 16 digs, five aces and 34 points.

Hershey 13, Chambersburg 3: The Trojans got off to a decent start in their season opener, tied with Hershey 2-2 after one period, and did well in some statistics, but Hershey outscored them 11-1 the rest of the way.

“Each mistake we made on fast breaks led to quick goals in the second and third quarters,” Chambersburg coach Paul Flohr said. “Too many turnovers and too many missed defensive assignments killed us.”

Trojan goals were scored by Haden Ocker, Thomas Elia and Dom Marangoni and Grayson Hopple had an assist. Nash Bothe won 10 faceoffs and won seven ground balls and goalie Angle Santos made 12 saves.

Flohr said, “Nash played lights out and Angel played great in the cage, making some huge saves from outside and in close.”

BASEBALL
Greater Latrobe 9, Chambersburg 0: Greater Latrobe scored six runs in the first three innings and held the Trojans to six hits in a non-league season opener Saturday afternoon. Chambersburg made two errors.

Six players each had a single for Chambersburg. Bryson Byers suffered the loss and Max Armstrong pitched two innings and allowed no earned runs.

Laurel Highlands 10, Chambersburg 5: In the second game Saturday, the Trojans fell behind 9-0 after three innings, but did put up five runs over the next three innings.

For Chambersburg (0-2), Armstrong, Gavin Kissel and Brady Hughes each had a pair of hits. Armstrong had a triple and double, Kissel drove in two runs and hit a double and Hunter Stevens also doubled.

The Trojans made six errors. Mason Yeager took the loss, while Elijah Snyder pitched 3. 2/3 innings and gave up two earned runs.
