Trojans’ Avery Barley places 5th in PIAA backstroke

Chambersburg’s Avery Barley placed 5th in the PIAA 100 backstroke.

LEWISBURG — Chambersburg senior Avery Barley made his final high school race count Saturday evening.

Barley posted a fine time of 49.70 to place fifth in the Class 3A boys 100 backstroke event at the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University.

In the morning prelims, Barley had the seventh-best time of 50.22, while Trojan teammate C.J. Pong clocked in at 51.44 for the 14th-best time. That put Barley in the final heat and Pong in the consolation heat.

Barley was in sixth place after the first 50 yards, but swam the final leg in 49.70 to end up in fifth place. Brendan Burns of Conestoga, the race favorite, won in 46.95.

Pong, a junior, ended up placing 15th, with a time of 51.81 in the consolation final.

Earlier in the day, Chambersburg senior Jacob Greenwood competed in the 500 freestyle and placed 21st in the prelims with a time of 4:43.55.

The Trojans’ 400 free relay team of Pong (48.52 split), Aidan McMillen (49.30), Barley (47.14) and Greenwood (50.61) finished in 23rd place with a time of 3:15.57.

Chambersburg finished in 27th place in the team standings with 25 points.
