HERSHEY — Chambersburg’s boys basketball team produced its lowest point total of the season at the wrong time.
Playing in the Mid Penn Conference championship for the first time, the Trojans couldn’t get it going against Trinity and fell 47-38 Friday night at Milton Hershey.
Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said simply, “We didn’t get the job done.”
The Trojans (19-5), who trailed for the majority of the first three quarters, held their last lead at 32-30 when Seth Brouse nailed a tough baseline jumper with 6:25 left.
Then came a bizarre string of calls by the officials — Brouse drew a charge against Patrick Walker, and on the next Shamrock possession, Tyler Collier was elbowed by Trinity’s Kalen Veres for his fourth foul.
Then at the other end, Collier made a simple move to the basket and his defender crumpled to the court, resulting in a third straight offensive foul call. It was also Collier’s fourth, now with 4:02 remaining.
Trinity (19-3) outscored Chambersburg 17-6 from that point on.
Chance Westry hit a jumper and Alex Zangari got free for a back door layup and completed a three-point play to make it 35-32 Shamrocks. After a Collier free throw, Walker drove for a basket, was fouled by Collier to send him to the bench with his fifth, and sank the free throw for a 38-33 lead.
Ethan Shreffler hit both ends at the line to bring Chambersburg to within 38-35, but Matt Long produced another backdoor layup with 1:40 left to make it 40-35 and the Trojans never got closer than four after that.
Chambersburg had trouble converting shots inside — big men Collier, Terell Williams and Ty Holsopple combined for just five baskets — and hit only two 3-pointers, both by Shreffler.
In addition, Collier and Williams both got into early foul trouble (each had a first-quarter charge) and neither played at all in the second quarter, when Trinity managed a 12-5 advantage.
The Shamrocks, the No. 1 seed in District 3 Class 3A, have won 12 straight games. This win ended an 11-game streak by the Trojans.
Shawn Shreffler said, “There are things we can improve on after playing a quality team like Trinity that will make us better heading into districts.”
No. 2 seed Chambersburg will host a District 3 Class 6A quarterfinal playoff game next Friday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday’s first-round game between No. 7 Central York (17-6) and No. 10 Warwick (17-6).
NOTES: Ethan Shreffler led Chambersburg with 10 points, Collier had 9 and Brouse 8 … Westry (13) and Walker (11) led the Shamrocks … The Trojans’ best offensive play of the night came just before halftime — on their only fast break of the game, Williams hit Max Doctor with a pass and Doctor skied for a layup and eventual three-point play … Trinity’s girls made it a sweep for the Capital Division with a 46-42 win over Cumberland Valley in the MPC girls final.
