The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers scored the final four points of the game to wipe out a late deficit and knock off Heritage Academy 52-50 Tuesday evening in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference girls basketball game.
“It was just an incredible game all around,” CVCS coach Dylan Ward said.
Freshman Mollee Stake hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to put the Blazers (14-6, 9-3 MDCC) on top 38-34 heading into the final period. They then built a nine-point lead early in the fourth quarter before Heritage chiseled away at the lead and eventually went ahead 50-48.
Freshman Keagan Yarboro banked in a shot from close range to tie the game, and then after the teams traded some possessions, junior Kyleigh Teal drove in for a layup with 12 seconds left to make it 52-50. Heritage had one last chance to tie, but the Eagles’ shot from in close glanced off the front of the rim.
“Kyleigh had a huge game-winning layup that sealed the win,” Ward said. “Jalen Moats was awesome tonight. She was all over the court grabbing rebounds and taking charges.”
Freshman Amber Yanosik led the Blazers with 15 points, Teal added 12, Moats scored eight and Laurel Reitz had seven. Also, Yarboro scored four points, Stake three, Brittany Morrow two and Maddie Eberly one.
“It was just one of the best games we have played offensively all season long,” Ward said. “We moved the ball and passed to the open player for open shots.”
In an MDCC game Monday, the Blazers pulled away in the second half to beat New Life Christian 52-38. The Blazers led 26-20 at halftime and then outscored New Life by eight in the second half.
Reitz scored 17 points, Yanosik 14 and Teal 13 to lead a balanced Blazer attack. Stake added four points, while Eberly and Yarboro each scored two.
“Our offense was very efficient,” Ward said. “We got a lot of easy buckets in transition and it set the tone for our press.”
