BOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 43, Carlisle 39: The Trojans won their ninth game of the last 10 by outlasting the Thundering Herd in a defensive Mid Penn Commonwealth struggle Tuesday night on the road.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game, but I was pleased with how we fought against a very hot team,” said Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler, whose team is now tied for first place with Cumberland Valley.

A Howie Rankine 3-pointer got Carlisle (7-9, 6-6 MPC) to within 38-37 with 2:20 left, bringing his team back from an 8-point deficit.

But Ty Holsopple scored on a putback for Chambersburg (13-4, 8-3 MPC), and, after a Herd turnover, Tyler Collier made a layup to make it 42-37 with 1:39 to go.

Rankine, who scored 25 points, drove for Carlisle’s last points, but the Herd could not catch up, even though the Trojans made only 1 of their last 6 free throws. The Chambersburg defense did not allow a good look in the game’s final minute.

The teams were tied at halftime, and after a low-scoring third quarter, the Trojans led 31-30.

To open the fourth period, Seth Brouse knocked down a 3-pointer, Aaron Maynard scored on a drive, and Brouse drove for a bucket to give the Trojans a 38-30 advantage.

Shreffler said, “Things went well for (Carlisle) early, and our guys just hung around. That was really crucial.”

Brouse led Chambersburg with 11 points and Maynard added a career-high 10 points.

The Herd put only four players in the scoring column.
