DONEGAL — James Buchanan took a surprise early lead against heavily-favored Elco on Wednesday night, but the Raiders ended up with a 6-1 victory in a District 3 Class 2A semifinal game.

With about 4 1/2 minutes played, the Rockets sent a ball over the top of the Elco defense, and a miscommunication enabled JB’s Addy Crouse to touch the ball into an empty net for a 1-0 lead.

The Raiders, who led in shots 12-4, took a 2-1 lead into halftime, then knocked in four goals in the latter half. Ryelle Shuey and Natalie Swingholm each had two scores for Elco.

The Rockets end their season with a 10-7-3 record and the furthest playoff run in the program’s history. Elco (19-0-1) will play for the district title against Boiling Springs on Saturday.
