NEW CUMBERLAND >> After a scoreless first quarter, Shippensburg’s football team looked like it could fall victim to what coach Eric Foust called a “prototypical trap game.”
The first minute of the second quarter put that theory to bed.
Adam Houser sparked a slow start by the Greyhounds with two long touchdown runs in the second quarter, and Ship went on to roll to a 37-0 non league win over Red Land on Friday night at West Shore Stadium.
On the second play of the second quarter, Houser took a power run on the left side and outran the entire Patriot defense for a 66-yard touchdown. A few minutes later, Houser hurdled a defender on his way to a 30-yard score and a 14-0 halftime lead for the Hounds (8-1).
“I was feeling the turf before the game and thinking that it felt like I could make a play,” Houser said of his leap, “but in all honesty, we just came out tonight and got right on them. We knew we needed to do that.”
Houser led the Ship offense with another outstanding game, rushing 27 times for 276 yards. Jacob Loy added 60 yards on the ground, and Zack Manning was 6 of 14 passing with 82 yards. As a team, Ship ran for 397 yards on 52 carries (7.6 yards/carry) as it continues to build on its identity as a smash-mouth football team.
“We came in and did what we needed to do tonight,” Ship coach Eric Foust said. “It was nice to see us get some production from the passing game, too. That’s something we need to continue to work on. We can’t be one-dimensional.”
“Our offensive line loves that smash mouth football, and Jake Loy is a monster and loves to lead block,” Houser said of the team’s mentality. “I can’t thank those guys enough for what they do, and Jake is a big part of our success over the last couple weeks.”
Red Land (1-8) mustered little offense and was constantly under fire from a Shippensburg defense that was able to pin its ears back and rush the passer in the second half. The Patriots mustered just 64 yards of total offense. The Greyhound defense forced one fumble and intercepted three passes, and freshman defensive end Anthony Smith finished the game with four sacks. Shippensburg hasn’t allowed a point in its last 10 quarters.
“Anthony is a great work in progress for us,” Foust said. “He played a very good game. He was very aggressive and worked hard up field. He has tremendous skills, and we just need to keep working with him.”
Houser added a six-yard score in the third quarter for his third touchdown of the game, and Kevin Seuro and Trevor Diehl also found the end zone for Shippensburg, which was able to dominate on the road a week before it travels to Big Spring to play for the Little Brown Jug.
Said Foust, “It was nice to get a big lead and let some young guys get in and score. We’re not used to scoring 37 points, so I was happy to play the way we did.”
