The James Buchanan Rocket football team will be road warriors again, but there is some extra incentive to make Friday’s 2-plus hour trek northeast worth while.
When the Rockets travel to Pottsville BVM they have a chance to make history running and throwing the ball and record wise.
Senior running back Cormac Houpt, who ran for 215 yards and 3 TDs in last week’s 42-14 win over Cesar Chavez-Parkside, is 21 yards shy of 1,000 for the season. Houpt is also 113 yards away from becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher.
Junior quarterback Sebastian Wise, who threw for 119 yards and 1 TD last week, is 77 yards away from 1,000 on the season.
“We have a special chance to have our quarterback and one of our running backs go over 1,000 in the same game,” JB coach David Miller said. “Those accomplishments are huge, but they both know without their teammates they wouldn’t have that chance. We just need to go out, play hard, and make some history.”
The other not so shabby accomplishment JB (3-4) is shooting for is reaching .500 for the first time this late in the season in at least 20 years. A victory would also give the Rockets back-to-back wins for the first time since 2013.
“Our motto this week has been ‘leave your mark’,” Miller said.
Standing in the way of all those achievements are the Pottsville BVM Green Wave. The Green Wave are a Class A team in District 11. Pottsville is 7-2 after beating Bucktail, for the second time this season, 28-20 last Friday. In the third game earlier this season Pottsville beat Bucktail 34-14.
In the win last week the Green Wave almost had three 100-yard rushers. QB Sincere Walker led with 154 yards and 2 TDs and RB Jake Ferhat added 127 and a TD. RB Raphael Muldrow just missed, finishing with 91 yards and a TD.
“They have some players that can run hard and they have some size up front,” Miller said. “They run a spread offense with some Wing-T principles. Their QB is their best player. If we continue what we’ve done the last three weeks I think we have a chance.”
NOTES: In the 40-plus history of Rocket football only 3 players have rushed for 1,000 yards in a season: Jason Neil (1,091 yards, 2001), Raymond Keith (1,082, 1966) and Aaron Garner (1,003, 1986) … JB added a 10th game to the season, Nov. 2 at Northern Bedford.
