CHAMBERSBURG — It’s been 25 years since anybody has seen a football score with “Chambersburg” going in front of “Cumberland Valley.”

But on Friday night for Homecoming, the Trojans ended a really long era of frustration by handing the Eagles a 28-14 defeat in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium. It was the first win over CV since 1993.

“Yeah, this win is big,” Trojan quarterback Brady Stumbaugh said.

“We had a lot of guys make plays tonight,” said Chambersburg coach Mark Luther after his team moved to 5-1 (2-1 MPC). “It’s awesome getting contributions from lots of different guys.”

It has been the Trojans’ quick-strike offense and the lethal runs of Keyshawn Jones that have powered the team through the first half of the season. Friday, the defense turned the game around and kept it that way.

A heads up play by Kyere Morton on CV’s first drive of the second half swung the game in Chambersburg’s favor. Halfback Jake Hart was bottled up by the Trojans behind the line of scrimmage when he tried to to his right.

“We had him wrapped up, so I came in and tried to strip him,” Morton said. “I just took it right of his hands.”

Not only that, but Morton then had free sailing down the sideline and ran 46 yards for a touchdown that made the score 14-7 in his team’s favor.

Two possessions later, the Eagles (0-6, 0-3 MPC) had picked up two first downs, but Morton dropped back into coverage and hauled in a pass from Jared Plessinger and returned the pick to the CV 49.

Four plays later, Jones took a pitch to his right, hesitated, then made one sharp cut inside and outraced the CV defense for a 32-yard TD to make it 21-7 with 10:48 remaining.

After the Eagles scored on a 22-yard, fourth-down pass from Plessinger to Jack Istvan, the Trojans ran for three first downs to eat some clock and reach the CV 33 before the drive was halted.

Trailing by just seven with more than three minutes left, Cumberland Valley still had a good chance. But on its third play, Plessinger was sacked by Tanner Hunt, who also knocked the ball free, and Garner Funk recovered at the Eagle 20.

Three runs by Jones later, he had scored from the CV 9 and the game was out of reach, 28-14 with 1:43 remaining.

Funk said, “Tanner stripped him of the ball. I saw it and was thinking of picking it up, but then I tripped and fell on it.”

Cumberland Valley’s final possession ended on an interception by Andrew Shetter.

“Before that last drive, the coaches told us they’d be taking some shots,” Shetter said, “and we played against it pretty well. This was a really big win; we knew it would be a hard game.”

And it was.

The Eagles played strong defense, never letting Jones get loose until his 32-yarder. He ended up with a season-low 92 yards on 18 carries and the offense had a season-low 244 yards. Stumbaugh ran for 68 more yards and hit on 6 of 12 passes for 83 yards.

CV opened the scoring in the second quarter when Maximos Dell’Anno ran in from 2 yards out after a 12-play, 62-yard drive — all on the ground — for a 7-0 lead.

But Chambersburg came right back with a good drive of its own. Stumbaugh hit Brady Hughes for 24 yards and ran for a first down himself. On third-and-12, Stumbaugh found Funk open down the middle for a 27-yard touchdown.

Funk said, “Just before that, I heard (assistant) coach (Gary) Carter call my name on the sideline, so I knew it was coming to me. The safeties went wide and left me open.”

That 7-7 score remained in place until the second half.

Luther said, “They were 0-5, but look at who they played. They were more physical than us in the first half, but we weathered it, and then we picked up our play. That strip was a big play by Kyere and then we changed up our coverages several times and it worked out.

“Our inside guys got pressure and it helped us make those interceptions.”

Morton said, “We watch film over and over again, and it plays a big role in the games.”

“We picked it up after halftime, and everybody got fired up,” Stumbaugh said. “We just executed better.”

NOTES: Luther pointed out how pleased he is with the kickoff coverage team — CV started possessions on its own 20, 26, 30, 26 and 15 … Tyler Luther was 4-for-4 on PATs … Chambersburg did not fumble the ball (the Eagles had 5 fumbles and lost 2) and did not have a penalty (CV had 3 for 32 yards) … There were zero penalties in the second half

Chambersburg travels to Central Dauphin East on Friday at 7 p.m.
