Looking back on last week’s loss to Mifflin County, Shippensburg football head coach Eric Foust’s biggest takeaway was a lack of overall energy from the team.
That doesn’t figure to be much of a factor this week.
Coming off their first loss of the season, the Greyhounds (4-1, 1-1 Mid Penn Colonial Division) will host Greencastle-Antrim (2-3, 0-2 MPC) on Friday night at 7, looking to get back on track on homecoming night.
“I think we are going to play very well,” Foust said. “We played uncharacteristically poor last week, and Mifflin County played well. We lacked a spark all night, but that’s not going to happen this week.”
Trailing 12-0 at halftime, Ship made a late charge and pulled within five late in the fourth quarter. But the Hounds couldn’t get one last stop on defense, and the Huskies were able to run out the clock to hold on for the 26-21 win.
Alex Sharrow had the biggest impact for Shippensburg, running seven times for 136 yards and two scores, while Quarterback Zack Manning also hooked up with Isaiah Houser for a 70-yard passing touchdown. Adam Houser was quiet for the first time all season, rushing 17 times for 35 yards.
Foust said, “I think our biggest issue was getting to the second level with our blocks. It’s something we worked on this week. They finally tackled Adam last week, but it was good to see other guys step up and make plays for us.”
On the season, Adam Houser has 88 rushes for 756 yards (8.6 yards/carry), and Sharrow has 362 yards on 26 carries, a 13.9 average. Manning is 18-for-41 for 368 yards and four touchdowns.
The Blue Devils are coming off a 34-21 loss to Northern York last week and are looking for their first win inside the conference.
Quarterback Max McDowell had 198 yards passing with 46 yards rushing and two touchdowns in last week’s loss. Antwoine Carter finished with five catches for 85 yards, and Ethan Murr had five catches for 74 yards.
“Their quarterback is a good football player, and they run some read option, which we struggled against last week,” Foust said. “Our linebackers are going to have to tackle very well.”
If Shippensburg can fix the little mistakes from last week and bring the energy Foust expects, the Hounds should be victorious on homecoming.
