After a 2 week hiatus the James Buchanan Rocket football team will be back in action Friday night.
But the Rockets opponent is sort of unknown.
JB will travel a little over 2 hours south to take on the Perryville (Md.) Panthers with a 7 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
Perryville, which is about 15 minutes northeast of Aberdeen, is in Maryland’s Class A and has a roster size very similar to the Rockets, which is about 35 to 38 players.
The Panthers are on a 2-game losing streak after opening the season with a 27-6 win over Pikesville (Md.). Last week Perryville lost 45-8 to Havre de Grace and 2 weeks ago lost 8-0 to Largo (Md.).
Rocket coach David Miller was able to watch game film of Perryville’s last 2 games.
“They run a wing-T offense and a 4-3 defense,” Miller said. “They have some pretty decent size lineman and a couple athletic players. They aren’t a real big team size wise so a lot of their players go two-ways.”
JB is also currently on a 2-game skid, the latest loss was 31-23 to Fairfield. Having the bye last week gave the Rockets the chance to regroup.
“We really broke down the Fairfield game and talked to the players about it,” Miller said. “We showed them plays where we could’ve made a play and didn’t. We also told them opportunities to make plays and score points are so small so when we get the chance we have to seize those opportunities.”
Against Fairfield, senior running back Cormac Houpt ran for 187 yards and 2 TDs.
“If we come out and do what we need to do we should be fine,” Miller said. “We told the players this is their longest bus ride of the season so it will be a lot more fun coming back if we win.”
