GIRLS SOCCER
Cumberland Valley 3, Chambersburg 2: The Eagles won the Mid Penn Commonwealth game Thursday night at Trojan Stadium, but CV, ranked No. 3 in the nation to start the season, got all it could handle from the Trojans.
The Eagles started quickly, scoring 2:20 into the game on the first of two goals by Emily Machinski. But Lauren Ocker tied it just over two minutes later on an assist from Layne Kimple.
CV went ahead 3-1 by halftime, but the Trojan defense did not allow any second-half scoring. With 22 minutes left, Chambersburg made it a one-goal game when another Kimple pass was knocked in by Gabby Lecuona.
“I was very proud of how hard the girls fought,” Trojan coach Ed Franchi said. “Unfortunately, we gave up another early goal, but we tied it two minutes later. We picked up the intensity in the second half, holding them scoreless and finding the back of the net ourselves.”
The Eagles (3-0-1) held a 20-4 advantage in shots over the Trojans (4-2, 2-2 MPC).
Franchi said, “Faith Johnson (11 saves) had a great game in goal.”

Carlisle 5, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans could not match Carlisle’s firepower and the Herd took a Mid Penn Commonwealth match at Norlo Park.
“Carlisle is very tough top to bottom,” Chambersburg coach Josh Barwin said. “I did see some good things, but we have our work cut out for us — we have three matches in four days next week. We’ll have to have short-term memory.”
Madison Mellinger at No. 2 singles scored the most points for Chambersburg (4-3, 0-1 MPC), falling 6-3, 6-2 to Olivia Gorak-Lacquement.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
