The Cumberland Valley Christian Blazers took sole possession of first place in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference with a 4-2 victory over Calvary Christian Tuesday in boys soccer.
The Blazers (7-1, 6-0 MDCC) and Calvary came into the game undefeated in league play.
“Calvary is the best team we have faced in our league this season,” CVCS coach Stan Hott said. “They have some really talented players. Jimmy Hong did a good job at midfield during the absence of Joel Vandersleen. The players stepped up and played well … not great, but well.”
After Calvary scored an early goal, Kenneth Hott tallied twice on assists from Caleb Eckert and Jack Gabler to give the Blazers a 2-1 halftime lead. Calvary tied the game at 2-2 at the 68th minute of the second half.
With 10 minutes left, Gabler, a freshman, directed in a kick from the right side of the goal to put the Blazers on top to stay. Hott picked up the assist. Hong sealed things with a goal on an assist from goalkeeper Eli Black with a minute to play.
Black was busy in goal, making 21 saves as Calvary outshot the Blazers 26-18. Calvary also had more corners, 7-2.
