Some days you’re the windshield, some days your the bug.
In this case the James Buchanan Rockets were the bug and got splattered by Big Spring.
That’s how JB head football coach David Miller summed up the Rockets 34-0 non-league loss to the Bulldogs.
“Yeah, we were the bug in this one,” Miller said. “I told the boys that was a good football team, but I also told them we’re a good team also and good teams need to find a way to bounce back. I don’t know if we were thinking this was an old Mid Penn Colonial game and we didn’t belong, but I told them we do belong.”
Big Spring (2-0) rolled up 505 yards of offense, 21 first downs and 21 first-half points.
- Quarterback Tim Siwy was very efficient, hitting 13 of 23 passes for 230 yards, including a 17-yard TD pass to 6-foot-6 junior Gavin Pritchard.
- Pritchard caught 5 passes for 81 yards
- Running back Nathan Fetchkan bulldozed his way to 143 yards, including a 72-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t fill gaps,” Miller said. “It was like we sat back and were passive which you can’t be in the 3-3-5 defense we play. We were in position to make a lot of tackles, but we didn’t make the plays.”
Offensively, the Rockets moved the ball, but inconsistency – dropped passes, overthrown passes, sacks (6) and 4 turnovers (2 fumbles, 2 interceptions) – halted most drives.
“The big difference was we had opportunities and didn’t convert,” Miller said. “But when they had opportunities they did.”
Rocket QB Sebastian Wise did pass for 190 yards, but it was on 30 attempts. Owen Stoner hauled in a team-high 7 passes for 75 yards.
JB (1-1) is back at home next Friday as it hosts Fairfield at 7 p.m.
