CHAMBERSBURG — Coach Mark Luther will find plenty of things for his Chambersburg football team to work on before its next game, like some defensive miscues and too many penalties.

But in the wake of the Trojans’ 51-26 rout of South Western in a non-league game Friday night at Trojan Stadium, Luther is not going to quibble too much.

The high-flying Trojans are now 2-0 for the first time in five years and have racked up 99 points in those two games. Chambersburg has scored seven touchdowns of over 40 yards already this season.

“The coaches put out the game plan, and we just have to go out and do what we need to do to win,” running back Keyshawn Jones said. “Tonight was a little bit of an eye-opener. The team is showing the resilience we need to compete in the Mid Penn Commonwealth.”

Jones had another huge night. He ran 13 times for 123 yards, including a 26-yard burst for the game’s first points and an 89-yarder that changed momentum after two straight Mustang TDs.

Jones also caught two passes for 92 yards, including a scoring play of 41 yards. He had another pass reception for 58 yards and a touchdown, but it was called back for an illegal block. All told, the junior speedster had nearly 250 yards of offense himself.

Luther said, “We knew he was a talented individual and he has that explosiveness. The O-line maybe didn’t play as well as last week, but they gave him some opportunities tonight and he took advantage.”

He wasn’t alone in piling up statistics — the Trojans totaled 465 yards on offense. Quarterback Brady Stumbaugh connected on 9 of 20 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for 42 yards and two scores himself.

“Brady is still growing and learning,” Luther said. “He had two interceptions, and he has to settle down and see the field better. But he has flat-line emotions, so he came right and did well.”

Chambersburg broke to a 14-0 lead and had South Western (0-2) in a third-and-22 hole at its own 19. But Derek Huff found Logan Schuman free behind the defense for a 39-yard gain, and on the next play, the Mustangs got a 42-yard TD scamper by Tyler Higdon.

When Erik-David Celeya made an interception for the Mustangs, they converted with a 6-yard pass from Huff to Desmond Moore. After Andrew Shetter blocked the PAT, it was  14-13 game.

Then Jones broke off his 89-yard run on the next play, and Tyler Luther later added a field goal for a 23-13 lead with 6:50 left in the half. But it was an eventful 6:50.

SW used another pick to set up its next touchdown, a 16-yard pass to Higdon from Jalen Bradford and it was 23-19.

But Stumbaugh then found Kevin Lee for a 65-yard scoring play, with Lee juking past two defenders to score.

“I knew the cornerback was playing me to the outside, so I made a move and beat him inside,” Lee said. “Once I got the ball, I tried to set them up. I went under one and then just went.”

The Trojans held the Mustangs and took over after a punt at South Western’s 38. On the second play, Stumbaugh found tight end Terrell Williams down the seam for a 31-yard gain to the 1. Stumbaugh sneaked into the end zone with 0:21 left in the half, creating a 37-19 advantage.

The game settled down a bit in the second half, with neither team scoring in the third period.

Late in the third, Alex Lapinski hit Huff and caused an incompletion on fourth down, and Chambersburg went 83 yards in nine plays, with the touchdown coming on a 5-yard slant from Stumbaugh to Tucker Perry.

The Mustangs got a 6-yard scoring run from Anthony Soriano, and the Trojans countered with a 6-yard scoring run from Stumbaugh.

The teams combined for 817 yards of offense. Despite that, Luther was happy with his defense.

“They were flying around, and we’re excited about their potential,” he said. “We’re still making some big mistakes, but we’re getting to the ball and tackling better. I’m proud of the defense, but we have a long way to go.”

The Trojans get to celebrate a second win, but it will be tougher next Friday when 2-0 Red Lion visits Trojan Stadium.

“Next week’s a big challenge and it will show us where we’re at,” Luther said. “I hope the school and community are excited about us, because we’re trying to put a good football team on the field to represent Chambersburg. This stadium is beautiful and it’s nice to hear all the fans screaming — it really helps the players.”

Senior Leon Corbitt said, “We just have to keep playing as a team, don’t take any more dumb penalties and make smart plays, and we’ll be fine.”
