SHIPPENSBURG — Greencastle-Antrim sophomore Taryn Parks had been battling injuries as the track & field season neared the postseason.
But Parks (pictured above, with Chambersburg’s Abby Yourkavitch earlier this season) pulled it together — in a big way — for the final day of the season.
Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium, Parks won her second consecutive state title in the girls Class 3A 1600 run during the PIAA Championships.
Her time of 4:46.09 was slightly slower than her winning time of a year ago (4:45.81), but it was good enough on a very hot day that made distance running a challenge. Katie Dammer of Abington Heights was second in 4:47.94 and Parks’ rival Marlee Starliper of Northern York was third in 4:49.01.
Three other area athletes earned medals Saturday.
Chambersburg senior Abby Yourkavitch capped off her remarkable career by placing third in the 3A 3200. Yourkavitch posted a time of 10:37.49. Starliper was the winner of that race, putting up a time of 10:25.28.

Josh Booth of McConnellsburg, a senior, was not able to defend his 2A 300 hurdles state title. Booth ran a faster time than last year (38.61 to 39.11), but had to settle for third place. Shady Side’s Michael Tomlin won the race in 37.93.
Senior Keri Gearhart of Greencastle brought home an eighth-place medal in the javelin. Gearhart’s best throw was 125-9.
Two other local competitors were in action Saturday. McConnellsburg’s Hailey Dodson, a sophomore, threw 35-3.25 in the 2A shot put to place 17th, and Shippensburg sophomore Alex Doyle competed in the 3A high jump, but did not post a height.
