LANCASTER — Alex Dominguez belted a two-run home run to left field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning Monday to account for all of the scoring in a District 3 Class 6A first round baseball playoff game.

That lifted McCaskey to a 2-0 victory over Chambersburg, ending the Trojans’ season. The Red Tornadoes (13-8) will face No. 1 seed Dallastown (16-4) in the quarterfinals, while Chambersburg finished 11-9.

“In four different innings, we had runners in scoring position, but just couldn’t get the big hit,” Trojan coach Scott Folmar said.

Austin Kopp (pictured above) pitched the first six innings for Chambersburg, which had won five straight games. He allowed only one hit — a bunt single — and a walk, while striking out eight, but exited after 94 pitches (63 for strikes).

Folmar said, “Kopp was fantastic. He’s had three or four outings like that for us this year. With his pitch count, we wanted to give (Kaden) Hoover a fresh start in the seventh inning.”

Hoover got through the seventh after giving up a walk. But in the bottom of the eighth, after walking the leadoff batter, then getting two outs, Hoover gave up the game-winning blast by Dominguez.

Dylan Esh blanked the Trojans for seven innings, then Dominguez pitched the eighth and got the win. Esh allowed only two hits (by Kopp and Hoover, pictured below) and fanned seven.

“Their pitcher had good velocity and threw his breaking ball for strikes,” Folmar said. “We had a couple of chances early, then in the sixth we got the first two batters on. Spencer Hockensmith hit a ball right on the barrel, but it went right to the leftfielder, then we had a strikeout and pop-up.”

Chambersburg made strides this season, finishing with a winning record overall and was 9-5 in the Mid Penn Commonwealth, good for fourth place.

Folmar said, “Over the last half of the season, we played pretty well and hit better — we came up with big hits in crucial situations. Today, we did not do that.

“But we did take a step in the right direction this season. We lose seven seniors, but we have some good young talent and hopefully we’ll take another positive step next year.”
