SHIPPENSBURG — The first day of the District 3 Track & Field Championships was held Friday at Shippensburg University, and Franklin County came up with 3 medalists.

Chambersburg’s Abby Yourkavitch was seeded No. 3 in the Class 3A girls 3200, and Northern York ace Marlee Starliper, the top seed, bested her by just over 5 seconds. Starliper ran a time of 10:32.07, while Yourkavitch (pictured above) placed second in 10:37.90, about 15 seconds faster than her seed time.

In the 3A boys shot put, the Trojans’ Brock Harmon and Derek Moore were seeded 1-2, but ended up finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Harmon (pictured below) threw the shot 50-1.25, while Moore finished at 49-11.25, an inch further than his previous best.

The only other area place winner Friday was Shippensburg’s Kevin Suero, who leaped 42-10.5 to take 11th in the triple jump.

In the trials for the girls 100 hurdles, Chambersburg’s Sydnie Gilbert qualified for the final. She ran 15.35 in the prelim race, then 15.00 in the semifinal. Her time was the fifth-best in the semifinal races.

In the boys 100 trials, the Trojans’ Tyeshawn Worrell suffered a cruel fate. In the prelims, Worrell turned in a time 10.86, which turned out to be the best time of the round. However, in the semifinals, Worrell false started and was disqualified.

The rest of the finals on the track and in the field will take place at SU on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
