YORK — No. 10-seeded Chambersburg edged No. 5 Exeter Township in the first round of the District 3 Class 3A boys volleyball tournament Thursday night.
The Trojans pulled out a 15-13 win in Game 5 to knock off the Eagles, who had just won the Berks County League championship.
Chambersburg (10-7) will face No. 4 Central York (13-1), a 3-0 winner over Conestoga Valley, in a quarterfinal match on Monday at 6 p.m. at Cumberland Valley. Exeter (14-3) was eliminated and had a 12-match win streak halted.
“It was a really big win for us, in a back-and-forth match,” Trojan coach Paul Schlabach said. “Exeter had played last night in their county championship and we hadn’t played since last Monday, and I think we may have had a little more in the tank at the end than they did.”
Chambersburg won with scores of 25-11, 23-25, 17-25, 25-18 and 15-13.
Schlabach said, “We won that first game big, and I think subconsciously we took our foot off the gas. We lost a little bit of focus in the second and third games, but fortunately we found our game in the fourth and got out to a big lead in the fifth.
“Blocking was key, with Ty Holsopple getting four blocks, Will Simmers getting five, and Steve Swain having two big blocks down the stretch against their go-to hitter.”
Trey Stepler led the Trojans with 15 kills, Simmers added 13 and Josiah Picard had 8.
Schlabach said, “We had Trey hitting some different shots; he used a couple of things new to his tool box down the stretch that paid off. Will, I think, was blocked only once all night, and those two blocks Steve had late really got us fired up.”
Wes Newman contributed 19 digs and 3 aces, Picard had 14 digs and Stepler added 12.
Chambersburg will not be seeing Central York for the first time, having lost 3-1 to the Panthers recently.
“We won the first game against them, but then their experience took over,” Schlabach said. “They are a great team, but we showed we cold play right with them.”
