GA Softball knocks off Previously Undefeated Northeastern

It was an opportunity to play a quality opponent outside of the Mid Penn Conference and an opportunity for Greencastle-Antrim’s young softball team to grow a little. Actually, when this one was done, it appeared they grew a good bit.

Taking on previously undefeated and reigning YAIAA Division II champions the Northeastern Bearcats (4-1), a team that return all starters from last year’s team, the Blue Devils put together an all-around solid game to record a 7-3 win.

GA (4-3/2-2) has been solid all year from the plate and yesterday was no exception as they pounded out 11 hits including two triples. Add to that, what had been a weakness just two days ago in the loss to the Waynesboro Maidens, their defense, shined on Friday. They committed only one error in the field and put together a very solid fielding effort.

To add to that, Olivia Remenick threw her best game of the season so far, allowing only six hits, striking out two and walking only three (with one being an intentional walk.)

Greencastle broke open the game in the second inning, scoring four times. Allison Reitz tripled with one out, and then with two outs, Alyassa Gaus, Kyle Cunningham and Emma DeCarli strung together three consecutive singles, and Hannah Beeler cleared the bases with the second triple of the inning.

Northeastern countered in the top half of the fourth when Janelle Castano led off with a solo homeroom to left field. That was all they would get in that inning. Greencastle added three insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth on three singles and two Bearcat errors.

Northeastern managed to put solo runs on the board I the fifth and seventh to narrow the deficit.

Kylee Cunningham led the GA bats with three hits in four plate appearances from the lead off position. Beeler, Reitz, and Gaus each added two hits apiece.

The Blue Devils return to Mid Penn Colonial Division action with a trip to Big Spring on Tuesday.
