Chambersburg hoops teams sweep Herd

Gabby LecuonaBOYS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 55, Carlisle 40: Joel Torres had a monster game on offense in the first half and his teammates picked him up when he got into foul trouble as the Trojans earned a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Thundering Herd on Friday night.

The win avenged a 41-40 loss to the Herd in December and raised Chambersburg’s record to 13-3 (7-2 MPC).

Torres scored 13 of his team’s 16 points in the first quarter and had 18 at the half. He hit three more buckets early in the third quarter, but then was saddled with foul trouble and wasn’t much of a factor before fouling out.

“He’s getting to his spots better and we’re doing a better job of finding him,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “It’s evolved as the season has gone on and the guys are getting more comfortable.”

Chambersburg trailed by only one point (17-16) after the first quarter, despite Carlisle (8-7) dropping in each one of its first four 3-point attempts.

“I thought we were well-prepared, but we certainly didn’t expect those threes,” Shreffler said. “But we hung in there and I told them at the end of the quarter that we’re in great shape.”

A three-point play by Cade Brindle tied the score 19-19, two straight buckets by Terell Williams and another by Torres made the score 25-19 and the Herd never got closer than three points again.

Leading by 10 early in the final quarter, Chambersburg got a 3-pointer by Noah Beidel, a layup from Tyron Williams and a trey by Seth Brouse around two Carlisle foul shots to put the Trojans up by 16 at 49-33.

Shreffler said, “Those were good, good looks, so you want them taking those threes. Credit to them for taking them and hitting them.”

Brouse hit a pair of free throws with 1:08 left and Beidel was 3-for-4 after that to seal the win. Carlisle had rallied to edge the Trojans in the earlier game when Chambersburg couldn’t hit from line down the stretch.

After that sharp first quarter, the Herd did not make another 3-pointer. Only Gavyn Barnes (18 points) was able to consistently score for Carlisle.

Shreffler said, “We did a nice job giving them different looks on defense, and did a great job on the defensive boards.”

The Trojans host unbeaten State College on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Chambersburg 50, Carlisle 44: Gabby Lecuona exploded for a career-high 24 points to lead the Trojans to their first Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory of the season, beating Carlisle by six at CASHS Field House.

Lecuona had six points at halftime and her team led 20-18. Then she fired in four 3-pointers in the third quarter to spark Chambersburg, which still led by two.

“They were letting her shoot in their zone, and I think she hit three in a row,” Trojan coach Barry Purvis said. “She really kept us in the game.”

In the fourth quarter, Lecuona scored six more points on a three, a basket and a free throw as the Trojans (6-9, 1-8 MPC) secured the victory and their third two-game win streak of the season.

Purvis said, “We played hard coming down the stretch and mostly kept our lead at 5 to 6 points. Taylor Vrabel had some big rebounds toward the end.”

Chambersburg sank only 4 of 12 shots at the free throw line, but made up for it by dropping in a season-high eight 3-pointers — five by Lecuona, two by Amanda Abbott and one by Robyn Stepler.

Ashley Adams contributed 8 points, Abbott had 7 and Vrabel 6 for the Trojans.

The win made up for a loss at Carlisle in December.

Purvis said, “We played pretty good defense overall tonight, but the big thing is, we made more shots.”
