BOYS BASKETBALL
Carlisle 41, Chambersburg 40: As Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said, “This will sting for a while.”
Chambersburg squandered a 37-31 lead with 1:15 left in the game — mostly by going 1-for-6 at the foul line in the fourth quarter — and the Thundering Herd made all the key plays at the end to steal a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory Monday night at CASHS Field House.
Howie Rankine made 1 of 2 foul shots with 27 seconds left to bring Carlisle (4-1, 3-0 MPC) within 38-37, then after a Trojan turnover, he followed in a missed shot to give his team the lead. At the other end, Rankine made a clean steal at the top of the key, then missed a heavily contested layup. But Herd teammate Gavyn Barnes rebounded the miss and scored on a layup with 0:13 left to give Carlisle a 41-38 lead.
Chambersburg (5-1, 2-1 MPC) missed a 3-point try, got the ball back with 2.9 seconds left, and could only score on a layup at the end.
Late in the third period, the Trojans trailed 28-22. Then Noah Beidel hit a basket, Cade Brindle made a fast break layup, Beidel hit a three and Terell Williams dropped in a trey for a 32-28 lead.
Tyron Williams hit a 3-pointer with 1:15 remaining in the game to jump the score to 38-31. At that point, the Trojans had finished off a 15-3 run. But from that point on, the Herd dominated.
A press caused Chambersburg problems, and the Trojans missed 3 of 4 free throws, including the front end of two 1-and-1s. Quentin Myers began Carlisle’s comeback with a three and his team scored 10 of the game’s final 13 points.
Shreffler said, “We hit some shots and played great defense once they went ahead 28-22. We got a lot of stops and rebounded well, and we controlled the tempo. We put ourselves right where we wanted to be.”
But the poor performance at the foul line (5-for-16 for the game) came back to bite the Trojans.
Beidel scored a career-high 11 points off the bench to lead Chambersburg and Brindle had 8. For the Herd. Barnes and Rankine each had 13.
“I told Noah last night that if he had a good shot, then take it,” Shreffler said. “He’s a good shooter, but he was struggling early. He hit some big shots tonight.”
